Chapter Eight

Steven got up and dressed early, like always. He was eager to get to the clinic and get the day started, especially since the new hire was starting today. For a brief time back before his father had decided to retire, they had considered turning the practice into a three-doctor operation, but for whatever reason those talks never blossomed into anything more. Then his dad had retired and he hired Carly to fill that spot. But now that her priorities were changing Steven knew that hiring a third vet was the right way to go. That way Carly could go off on her maternity leave with no worries, and when it was over she could come back and work only part time for however long she wanted to. It was the best idea for all concerned. Besides … it was either this or risk losing Carly completely.

He sighed as he turned off the light in his bedroom, wondering where the heck Bosco was hiding. That dog normally stuck to him like glue in the mornings – his way of making sure Steven didn’t forget to feed him and let him out one more time before he went off to work.

“Bosco? Here boy!”

He frowned when his call still didn’t bring the happy Airedale Terrier to his side, and Steven tried to remember when he had seen him last. He had let the dog inside just before he got into the shower, like every morning, so he had to be in the house somewhere. Oh well, he thought. He knew the dog would come running once he heard the kibble hitting his food dish.

He ventured down the stairs and into the kitchen, heading straight for the fridge to get the creamer for his coffee. And as he swung open the fridge door he suddenly froze as all the blood drained from his face, and the hair on his neck and arms stood up straight. He felt as though … oh, what was that expression? That someone had just walked over his grave?

Slowly he closed the refrigerator door and turned around, not really expecting to see what his mind had registered in an instant, but not truly focused on. He gasped loudly as his stomach did a free fall and he clutched his chest, falling back against the fridge door.

“Gabe!”

“Steven.”

He was dressed in his sheriff’s uniform and he was sitting at the kitchen table scratching Bosco’s head as the dog sat obediently at his side. At first glance it looked like a friendly enough picture, except that the sheriff seemed angry and his gray eyes appeared to be glowing! And when he had spoken Steven’s name the word came out more like a growl than actual speech. But Steven was too lost wondering if he had only imagined seeing fangs or if that part had been real?

“Um, what are, uh … I mean, this is a … surprise,” Steven mumbled, glancing around nervously and wondering how the man had gotten into his house.
